A BOGUS damp proofing company has been targeting a borough’s elderly and vulnerable population.
Lancashire Police and Trading Standards have asked all Hyndburn residents to be on their guard after an elderly lady paid more than £1,000 to have a small area of her home treated with chemicals after being doorstepped by the company.
The problem has led police to appeal for information and to issue a warning.
Inspector Dave Mangan at Accrington police said: “Anyone who is concerned about the identity of a person at their door should ask for identification and if they are still unsure, contact the police.
“The police take reports of such incidents very seriously. If they are genuine callers, they won’t mind householders being extra cautious.”
Chief trading standards officer for Lancashire County Council, Jim Potts said: “Some callers try to sell you repairs while others may trick you into paying for work that will never be done.
“However tempting the offer, they may not be genuine.”
Officers recommend avoiding cold callers when arranging house repairs.
Anyone who is concerned about recent damp proofing work they have had arranged is asked to contact police on 0845 1 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
