POLICE starting their patrols in Bacup caught a teenage drink-driver on the spot, a court heard.

Police leaving the town’s Bank Street station, just after midnight on November 8, could hear the sound of wheels screeching and a car engine revving loudly, Rossendale magistrates heard.

The officers then saw a Kia Rio car turn into Bank Street and park up in spaces outside the station.

Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said the officers spoke to the driver, Nathan Forrest, 18, who appeared to be unsteady on his feet.

Forrest was asked by police if he had been drinking and he failed a subsequent roadside breath test, she added.

Later at Burnley police station he gave a breathlyser reading of 61mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mg.

Forrest, of Rochdale Road, Bacup, admitted driving with excess alcohol and having no insurance and was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also fined £100 with £50 costs.

Brian Walsh, defending, said the car belonged to his client's girlfriend’s mother and he did not realise he was not insured to drive it.

He believed it was parked in an unsafe area of Bacup and he had decided to move the vehicle to a more reliable location, the court heard.
