FOUR puppies have been found new homes within days of being left for dead in a Pendle man’s back yard.

Joe Riley, of Regent Street, Nelson, was alerted to the four boxer cross pups dumped in a cardboard box without food and water when he heard them crying.

He found the ‘frail’ dogs ‘cold and shivering’ so took them in for the night and fed them before notifying the RSPCA in Accrington the next morning.

But the society had no room for the pups, so Pendle Council collected them and took them to boarding kennels, from where staff have found them new homes.

Coun John David, leader of Pendle Council, who also speaks on environmental issues, said: “I am appalled that someone could do this, but I am very glad that we have been able to help.

“There is absolutely no need for this cruelty, and I hope that the person who did it feels thoroughly ashamed of themselves.”

Council officers took the six-to-eight-week-old puppies to Aspen Valley Boarding kennels, in Oswaldstwistle.

They have all been found new homes within five days of being found in Mr Riley’s back yard.

Laura Robinson, Pendle Council’s dog welfare officer, said: “Dogs are expensive to look after and need lots of walking, care and attention.

“I am glad that the pups will now be looked after correctly by loving families.

“There are lots of needy dogs at the kennels, but only people that are seriously committed to caring for a dog should take one.

“This is to prevent situations like the puppies being dumped happening again.”
