BLACKBURN’S festive season got underway with a bang as a spectacular fireworks display rounded off the town’s Christmas lights switch-on.

Coronation Street stars Jack P Shepherd and Michelle Keegan helped mayor Mohammed Khan turn on the display on a stage outside the town hall on Saturday night.

The packed schedule saw live music including a steel band entertain the growing crowd from late afternoon, and ball-juggling supremo John Farnworth, of Longridge, showed off his skills. The event was compered by presenters from The Bee radio station.

Organisers’ prayers were answered as the rain held off while snow machines on the roof of the shopping centre added to the chilly night atmosphere.

Members of a tribute act to the popular High School Musical weren’t put off by the cold weather as they danced around the stage wearing shorts and t-shirts, to the delight of the younger members of the audience, who joined in.

But the loudest screams were saved for the on-screen couple from Coronation Street, who took part in a mock quiz about the soap on stage.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph before the switch-on, Michelle, who plays Tina McIntyre, said: “It’s a huge crowd – there’s more people than I expected.”

Jack, who plays David Platt, added: “It’s not far to come for us, and it certainly puts us in the mood for Christmas.”

Afterwards Coun Khan said he hoped this year’s festive display would boost trade in the town and help shops battle the credit crunch.

He said: “It was a wonderful night and it’s fantastic to see so many people and all ages here.

“It will send a message to everyone that Blackburn has a lot to offer.”
