FIRE crews reminded people to check their smoke detectors after a device helped raised the alarm in Rawtenstall.
Firefighters had to break into the house in Fairfield Avenue after the next-door neighbour heard the smoke alarm and called for help. The owner was not in at the time.
Watch Manager Tony Keane said: “This is exactly what we have smoke detectors for, and without it the house would have been much more badly damaged.
"I want to urge everyone to test theirs to ensure they are working properly, and to call 0800 169 1125 for a free home fire safety check."
