FIREFIGHTERS tackled non-stop Bonfire Night calls, including a major arsonist attack on derelict terraces.

Crews from Blackburn, Accrington and Darwen said calls were constant from 6pm until 3am but that most involved checks on under-control bonfires.

Accrington fire crews were called to the biggest incident of the night in Poland Street where they used an aerial ladder to tackle seven blazing properties.

The fire had started in a derelict terraced house when arsonists set fire to the upstairs level, which spread to six other derelict properties.

Fire crews were on the scene from 8.30pm to 9.45pm and had 30 call-outs during the night overall.

Blackburn fire crews were also busy with 76 call-outs, but said only half of the calls were to out-of control bonfires.

Watch manager Alan Ashworth said: “It was a busy night in Blackburn but fortunately no major problems.

"The fires which could have set light to nearby buildings were dealt with.

"We had many calls to the old Infirmary site bonfire as it could be seen for miles - but it was in a remote location and under control.”

Firefighters at Darwen tackled 23 fires during the night but said that only four needed to be extinguished.

Watch manager Steve Harrison said: “We checked on quite a few and people have been listening to the recent advice.

"Most had adult supervision, a way to extinguish the fire, and they had kept the bonfire away from trees and buildings.”

Throughout the night, Lancashire Fire and Rescue’s control room received 460 calls.

Of these, 143 were bonfires that were out of control.
