PROPOSALS for a brand new adventure play area for children in a Pendle town are being backed by councillors.

Pendle Council plans to build the play area, consisting of various climbing frames, on land bounded by Shaw Street and Exchange Street, in Colne.

The open space, which is situated south of the town centre, is currently barren.

Plans for the new state-of-the-art children’s play area will now be considered by Colne and District Committee on Thursday.

The recreation area will be enclosed by a one-metre high tangorail fence, with a blocked paving access path at each side.

It will be situated next to a youth centre, multi-use games area and a junior play area.

In a report to the Colne and District Committee, it says: “The existing open space would be transformed into an adventure play area and would therefore not result in a net loss to the community it serves.

“The siting of the proposal on the south east corner of land bounded by Shaw Street and Exchange Street is appropriate for the area, with no likely adverse impact on residential amenity.” The council has recomm-ended the application for approval, saying there are ‘no material reasons to object’ to it.

Waterside ward Coun Graham Roach, expects the plans to get the full backing of the Colne and District Committee.

He said: “We have had consultations with residents in the area and everyone thinks it’s a good idea.

“We want to put something for kids in the area and it’s ideal to utilise a piece of land that is not being used for anything at the moment.”
