THOUSANDS of people in East Lancashire celebrated Bonfire Night over the weekend - but there are still plenty of events to come.

Crowds flocked to Blackburn’s annual Witton Park Bonfire on Saturday to watch a spectacular firework display.

Run by Blackburn Lions, Rotaract and Round Table, event organisers hoped to raise thousands of pounds for Derian House Children’s Hospice, Chorley, by asking for donations.

On the same night in Clitheroe, crowds gathered at Clitheroe Castle field for the town’s annual bonfire sponsored by Castle Cement.

It was organised by the Rotary Club of Ribblesdale with the Rotary Club of Clitheroe, Clitheroe Lions Club, Clitheroe Round Table and the Rotary Club of Pendle View.

Hospital staff are preparing for a busy night tonight, but have issued advice to help people stay safe.

Last year, 10 patients were treated for firework-related injuries on bonfire night, and hospital bosses stressed that the “walk-in” urgent care centres at both the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital would be open as usual.

Dr Geraint Jones, medical director for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Minor burns can be treated at either Urgent Care Centre but severe burns, burns to the face or smoke inhalation need to be treated at the Royal Blackburn’s dedicated Emergency Department.

“If you think the injury is severe enough to need an ambulance, dial 999 and you will be brought directly to the Emergency Department.

Pet owners are advised to keep all animals indoors when fireworks are expected and help them find a safe place to hide.
