SPONGEBOB Squarepants will share a stage with Burnley’s karaoke idol for the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on event.

Nickleodeon’s underwater superstar will flick the switch for the town centre and Charter Walk’s festive illuminations on November 13.

And one karaoke star will have the chance of a lifetime in the spotlight as part of a challenge arranged by Benedictine.

Burnley Miners Club is hosting the search for a star competition on Friday with the first prize a place on the bill for the lights ceremony.

Judges will be on the lookout for singing ability, crowd reaction, charisma and overall performance from would-be stars, who need to enrol by 7pm.

Meanwhile town centre chiefs have lined up a host of attractions for the event, including a tour by Spongebob.

Father Christmas will be making a flying visit, courtesy of Burnley Rotary Club, and performances from Shelle’s Belles, Guys As Dolls show team, Burnley Youth Theatre and It’s My Party, as part of a show hosted by 2BR radio.

Santa will take to the stage later, while Spongebob does the honours with the lights, and the festivities will be capped with a fireworks display.

The event marks the beginning of late Christmas opening in Burnley, with many stores trading until 8pm on Thursdays.

Coun Roger Frost, executive member responsible for the town centre, said: “The lights switch-on celebrates the start of what we hope will be a joyful Christmas season.”
