RESIDENTS and councillors could be about to claim victory in their plea for traffic calming measures in Brierfield.

People living in Halifax Road complained to Pendle council’s Brierfield and Reedley committee in September about the “excessive speed” of cars travelling down from the Lane Ends pub, before a nearby speed camera.

The committee agreed to refer the matter to Lancashire County Council’s highways department, bearing in mind that new traffic lights were also being considered for Lane Ends.

And councillors have now been told that problems along Halifax Road could be listed as a priority for next year’s round of highway safety schemes.

Coun Michael Blomeley said: “Pennine Way and Heyhead Street are becoming rat runs for people.”

A Lancashire County Council highways report said: “(We) appreciate the residents’ concerns regarding traffic speeds in this area of Brierfield and the committee’s request for traffic calming measures and/or an interactive sign in an attempt to reduce vehicular speeds on this highway.

“Having investigated the accident data for Halifax Road, it appears that a number of injury accidents have occurred in the previous five years, although at this stage it is unknown if the accidents are speed-related.”

Officials will also be considering the introduction of a interactive devices to warn rogue drivers that they might be breaking the limits there.
