PERFORMERS from Haslingden and Helmshore have returned to winning ways at a national brass band competition.
Haslingden and Helmshore Band went to the Pontins National Brass Band championships and walked away with the the first prize in the second section.
Playing Alan Fernie’s ‘A Royal Mile’ suite, the band secured first place and won £1,800 in prize money, along with their trophy.
The band took heed of the advice of adjudicators Malcolm Brownbill and Colin Hardy, who called for closer attention to be paid to tempo by the musicians.
Dave Holland, band conductor and musical director, said: “The win means that the band have won the Butlin’s championship and the Pontin’s championship in the same year – not a feat easily achieved.
“It’s a pity Maplin’s holiday camps don’t do contests as well!"
The band is hoping to end the year with another prize when they take part in the Wilkinson’s championships in November.
