A CANDLE is thought to have started a fire that badly damaged a flat.
Fire crews were called to the first-floor flat on Dean Fold in Rawtenstall just before 5am.
The resident woke up after neighbours raised the alarm, and firefighters used breathing apparatus to get inside and tackle the blaze.
