A LARGE-scale equestrian complex could be built in Feniscowles.

Plans have been submitted to build 41 stables, as well as an outdoor access track on a 35-acre site in green belt land off Preston Old Road, Blackburn.

Applicant Quin Beech, of Hoofers Equestrian, based just outside Darwen, said the scheme had won the backing of most residents following a public meeting in February.

Local councillors have also given the thumbs-up to the plans.

Mr Beech said the centre, which could cost up to £1million, would help the area cash in on the fast-growing sport, which has enjoyed a surge of popularity since the Olympic Games in the summer.

He said: “We want to provide a facility for local people to enjoy.

“Horse riding is a growing pastime and we want to improve the quality of life for people across Blackburn.”

As part of the plans, the original gateway linking the land with to Preston Old Road will be reopened. Mr Beech said the centre would be over the crest of a hill, screened by the woodlands of the former railway embankment. Extra footpaths, including opposite the petrol station on Preston Old Road, would also be created.

Mr Beech said he had only received a couple of objections to the plans, which he had tried to accommodate before lodging the application.

Ward councillor Derek Hardman said: “It’s good that he’s held a consultation before submitting the plans. Some people don’t even bother doing that.”

Executive member for regeneration Alan Cottam said the scheme was “interesting but not controversial.”

The plans will decided in the coming months by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning committee.
