OFFICIAL bonfire night celebrations will be missing in Burnley for the second year running.

Last year the Burnley Community Bonfire, which has attracted thousands to the town in past years, had to be cancelled for the first time in 20 years due to work being carried out by Lancashire County Council at its venue – Fulledge Recreation Ground.

The event was organised by Frank Seed, of Burnley Lions club, but he retired last year and with work still ongoing, there are no plans to reignite the popular festivities.

There will also be no official bonfire in Pendle and in both areas authorities are warning people who want to have a bonfire to register it with the council to avoid prosecution.

Burnley Council bosses said a Hallowe’en Spooktacular with a fireworks display, will take place in Thompson Park, on Friday, October 31.

The Hallowe’en event will begin at 4pm when the fairground is opened and the fireworks display will start at around 9pm.

Gordon Birtwistle, leader of Burnley Council, said the event, which attracted up to 4,000 visitors, “died a death” after Mr Seed’s retirement.

He added: “I used to enjoy the community bonfire, but the county council has spent over £1,million on the site and we are not able to have it there any more.

“At this moment there is quite simply nowhere to have it and no-one to organise it. I can’t see us having anywhere again in the future.”

In recent years fireworks displays have been held in Victory Park Barnoldswick.

However, Pendle Council said no official celebrations are planned for the borough this year and added that any bonfires found by its workers will be removed immediately.
