A TOWN council for Great Harwood has moved a step closer despite claims residents are “apathetic” to the idea.

Last night Hyndburn councillors voted to approve a review that will determine whether a town council should be formed.

A previous consultation showed a higher interest for the move in Great Harwood than in other areas, with about seven per cent of residents in favour.

But Labour group leader Graham Jones said: “In my opinion it’s not enough of mandate to take this forward.”

He claimed the consultation had been misleading, and Great Harwood residents thought they were being offered an independent council from Hyndburn.

But Conservative for Netherton ward Lynn Wilson said people were keen for the town council to be created.

She said: “The last thing I would accuse the people of Great Harwood of being is apathetic.

“I walk down the main street of Great Harwood and it’s the one thing that’s being discussed.”

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said an initial consultation carried out last year had shown “significant interest” in Great Harwood in debating the issue of a town council.

He said: “I’m not saying whether I think there should be a town council or not. But I do think it’s right in the circumstances to give the people the right to decide.”

The Hyndburn council-led review will run until February.

A town council, which would mean a small increase in council tax, would have low-level powers, which could include maintenance of street lighting, and public spaces.
