A piece of history will be created this week as one of Britain’s tallest and most iconic landmarks, Blackpool Tower, hosts its first ever wedding at Tower Top 380ft above the Blackpool sky line.

The first ever legal wedding ceremony will take place at the top of the Tower at 1pm on Friday as bride Gemma Dee, a presenter with Preston radio station Rock FM, and Shaun Ray are to be married by Blackpool’s Chief Registrar David Hill and Gemma's radio co-host Adam Catterall in front of 120 family and friends.

There have been several blessings held over the years at the top of the Tower but no one has ever held the actual service anywhere other than the ballroom.

The wedding will be extra special in many ways as Rock FM breakfast show presenter Gemma ties the knot including co-presenter Adam playing a big part in the service and the groom arriving in a Trotters Independent Traders’ van made famous in the 1980's comedy, Only Fools and Horses.

Other unique features of holding a wedding at Tower Top mean that management at the Tower will be hoping for a calm day as the lifts to the Top have to be closed in the case of high winds.

Flowers, carpet, chairs and all the guests will be transported to Tower top in rotation in two lifts which take approximately 69 seconds minutes to complete the 300ft journey.

The bride and groom will also have to wait several seconds at the crucial moment to see if any objections are made clear over the two-way radios situated at the bottom of the Tower and at the top to satisfy the legal requirements.

Geoff Sage Tower Manager comments: “We have such a unique venue that since that licence was granted we have been inundated with date requests for future services.

"On a clear day the views from the top are spectacular and the fact that this is first wedding at the top in the Tower’s history mean that it will certainly be a day for all to remember.”

Gemma said: “People say that your wedding day is the most amazing day of your life, one you will never ever forget.

"I don’t think there’s any chance whatsoever of us and our guests forgetting us getting hitched at the top of Blackpool Tower.

"It will certainly be one to tell the grandkids about.”

The bride and groom have chosen to make the most of this momentous occasion by hosting their reception in the magnificent Tower Ballroom.

Following the service guests will be able to enjoy the rest of the Tower which houses a state of the art play area complete with huge party galleons, a private cinema and an award winning circus.

Friday will also be the day that Gemma says goodbye to Lancashire as she retires from radio to spend the next few months travelling around the world with her new husband.

Local lass, Katie Mack will be joining Catterall as his new partner in crime from Monday October 27.

To listen to the wedding live tune in to 97.4 Rock FM from 1pm on Friday October 24.
