A BUDDING East Lancashire chef lost out on the chance to take his authentic Mexican dish to the finals of a national food competition.
Alejandro Guillen, or Alex, from Blackburn, competed against seven other amateur chefs from the North West to go through to a head to head for a place in the national finals on ITV show Britain’s Best Dish.
Mexican-born Alex cooked spicy chicken flautas, or tacos, served with a tomato salsa and guacamole at Westminster Catering College in last night’s show, which aired at 5pm.
After preparing the dishes they were lined up ready for the taste test.
But food critics and the show’s judges chef John Burton Race, writer and wine expert Jilly Goolden and chef Ed Baines found Alex’s dish to be ‘dull’.
They commented that the tacos were over cooked and cracked and dull but said that the guacamole was ‘spicy’ and ‘nice’.
Alex then looked disappointed when he was told by Jilly Goolden he was out.
