Rush hour traffic was brought to a standstill after a multi vehicle pile-up on the M65.
Miles of the eastbound carriageway was gridlocked after the smash close to the junction eight Accrington turn off around 4.45pm.
Police said a white van and Jaguar car appeared to have collided and another two vehicles were believed to have been involved in the smash.
