SCORES of customers may have been overcharged by a faulty chip and pin machine at a Burnley off licence, it has emerged.

Police have confirmed that they investigated complaints that some customers who last week paid with credit and debit cards at the Nisa store, in Coal Clough Lane, were charged seven times what they agreed to pay.

However, there is no suspicion of any wrongdoing on the part of the shop’s owner and no further action is being taken by police.

Insp Jez Holland, from Burnley police, said officers had received “at least 10 complaints” from people last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

But he added: “It is not a criminal act and it is not a police matter, it is something that needs to be taken up with the bank.

“We believe steps have now been taken by the shop owner and the chip and pin provider to stop the same happening again.”

Customers who believe they have been overcharged by the shop’s machine have been assured they will get their money back, providing they have receipts or other paper work.

Julian Edwards, from Lancashire Trading Standards, said: “This kind of things does happen to people.

“The line people should take is to contact the credit card company and challenge the transactions because you are not responsible for any repeat transactions.

“Most credit and debit card companies will sort it out and the problem will undo itself.

“However, it’s critically important that people check their statements and notify their bank immediately.”

No one from the Nisa shop was available for comment.
