CHILDREN can now enjoy brand new swings thanks to the initiative of a six-year-old-girl.

Olivia Walmsley yesterday unveilled the new swings at Oswaldtwistle’s West End Play Area after telling Hyndburn Borough Council she had grown too big for the baby swings.

Councillors were so impressed by the letter she wrote to them about the problem, they agreed to give a £1,000 grant towards granting her wish.

Olivia, who lives in Norman Road, had asked her parents if there was someone she could write to after she grew too big to comfortably play on the two baby swings at the park.

Leader of the Council Coun Peter Britcliffe said: “I’m really proud of Olivia and I’m sure her parents are too.

“It’s fantastic that we’re doing this during democracy week, because Olivia is a true example of what it’s all about.

“So many young people think democracy has nothing to do with them and then there are people like Olivia who get involved.”

The West End Primary School pupil has been playing at the park at the bottom of the street since she was a baby.

When she realised the swings were getting too tight for her, she asked her parents ‘who looked after the park’ and if she could write to them about it.

Mrs Walmsley, a nurse, sent Olivia’s letter to the council in June.
