BURNLEY MP Kitty Ussher met a top minister to try to boost the town’s bid for a direct rail link to Manchester.

Miss Ussher held talks with Lord Adonis, Minister for Trains, to discuss plans to reinstate the Todmorden Curve stretch of track.

Business leaders, council bosses and campaigners say connecting Burnley directly to Manchester would cost around £4million but would swell the town’s economy.

Burnley Council wants the North West Development Agency (NWDA), Network Rail and Northern Rail to back the scheme, which would offer 38-minute journeys to Manchester.

Miss Ussher described her meeting with Lord Adonis as “constructive” but urged Lancashire County Council to show more enthusiasm for the scheme.

She added: “I felt that this was a really positive meeting.

"I believe that a fast train link to Manchester is essential for Burnley’s future prosperity and I will continue to campaign hard for it to happen.”
