A top chef has given his seal of approval to new design technology facilities at a Blackburn high school.
Michelin-star chef Tom Parker returned to St Wilfrid's CE Academy to help Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Cllr Brian Taylor officially unveil the upgrade, which includes two classrooms for food prep and nutrition.
The £500,000 addition hosted a masterclass by St Wilfrid's alumni Tom, who currently works at the White Swan in Fence.
Principal Vicki Michael said: "“We are incredibly proud to open these new facilities, which represent more than just bricks and mortar.
"This is a long-term investment in the future of our students and gives them an environment which not only meets the demands of the curriculum, but provides them with the potential to excel.”
The classrooms are packed with the latest technology to enable students to explore their talents.
Catherine Tipton, learning area co-ordinator, added: "“We were thrilled to have Tom join us for the opening and to have him lead the students, very patiently, through an incredible masterclass.
"His skills and enthusiasm were a huge source of inspiration and the opportunity to work directly with him was so exciting for the students.”
Staff, governors and young people joined Cllr Taylor and Tom for a buffet lunch prepared by food technology students. Former design technology staff were also invited along to see the new venture.
Tom, as part of his masterclass, demonstrated his culinary expertise by teaching students how to make pasta from scratch, with a particular focus on preparing lobster ravioli.
Teachers say the hands-on session gave students "invaluable skills and a glimpse into the exciting career opportunities within the culinary industry".
Tom started his own culinary career at the age of 16 after writing to renowned chef Nigel Haworth and securing a job at Northcote in Langho. He won a Young Chef of the Year crown.
He worked with executive chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen before making the journey to his current Pendle establishment, known locally as 'The Mucky Duck' in 2013. Tom has appeared on TV's Great British Menu and was first given his Michelin star in 2018.
