A man from Lancashire has been charged and eight others arrested, including a man from Prestwich, over alleged tragedy chanting at a recent Liverpool FC match.
Kian Holt, 19, has been charged on suspicion of the offence following the Premier League match at Anfield between Liverpool and Manchester City, which the Reds comfortably won 2-0 to open up a nine-point gap at the top of the table.
Holt, of Medlar-with-Wesham in Fylde, has been charged under Section 3 of the Football Offence Act 1991 and is due to appear at Sefton Magistrates' Court on Merseyside on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Tragedy chanting like what Holt is accused of at Anfield often surrounds the Hillsborough disaster which claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters.
Alongside Holt, eight other men were arrested on suspicion of the same offence following Sunday's match.
They are:
- A man from Prestwich, aged 28
- A man from Audenshaw, aged 38
- A man from Denton, aged 52
- A man from Failsworth, aged 57
- A man from Manchester, aged 53
- A man from Macclesfield, aged 32
- Two men from Rochdale, aged 47 and 58.
The two men from Rochdale have been discharged for voluntary attendance.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah handed Liverpool the three points against last season's Premier League champions.
