Children at a Rossendale Primary School were treated to an afternoon of rugby league action, with a visit from Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

Showing off their new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), children at Balladen Community Primary School were treated to an afternoon of games and learning by the quadruple-winning side.

The team at Wigan Warriors educated the children and staff on the history of the club, which stretches back to 1874, and their most famous players and successes.

This season, the Cherry and Whites completed an unprecedented quadruple, winning the World Club Challenge against Penrith Panthers from Australia, beating Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final, topping Super League to win the League Leaders' Shield, before seeing off Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League Grand Final.

Warriors’ mascot Max officially opened the facility before the coaching staff delivered rugby-based games on the new facility, which was thoroughly enjoyed by pupils.

Danny Fullerton, head of the community foundation at Wigan, said: “The children have been receptive to Wigan Warriors visiting.

“The afternoon started with education and a fun interactive quiz which was followed by Tag Rugby, which had a fantastic take-up and the children really enjoyed it.”

Balladen’s MUGA is one of several infrastructure upgrades at the school and is aimed at improving children’s mental and physical well-being, which is considered vital to a balanced curriculum.

John Walley, rugby league development manager, said: 'Wigan Warriors are engaging with local schools, and Accrington Wildcats, to increase participation in rugby league in our area.

“The aim is to bring schools and their community together in a partnership in 2025".

The school has recently used the new facility to host other schools for sporting events including football and netball and has received excellent feedback on the facility.

Pupils also got to grab a glimpse of all four trophies picked up by the Warriors this season - the first time a side has completed a clean sweep of honours.
