A driver 'sped off' leaving a smashed-up fridge strewn across a busy Blackburn road, witnesses claim.
The incident happened at around 1.15am overnight on Saturday morning on Buncer Lane.
Witnesses said they heard a loud bang and first thought it was a car crash, as the vehicle headed up from the Preston Old Road junction.
A number of passing vehicles drove around the fridge or over the plastic shelving.
The incident will be reported to the local council environment teams.
One resident said: “We thought a car had hit something.
“The fridge was in the road and the force of the fall had smashed it up.
“It had made quite a mess and you would have thought whoever was driving the vehicle would have noticed a fridge falling off the back.”
A resident came out and lifted the fridge on the footpath and cleared the road of most of the debris.
Remnants of yoghurt tubs could also be seen in the road.
