The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for fog covering parts of East Lancashire.

The warning, which covers Blackburn and Darwen in East Lancs as well as western parts of the county, came into effect late last night (November 27) and will remain in place until 11am today.

The weather service has warned those travelling via public transport there could be delays to bus and train services, and slower journey times may be possible.

They also said there is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Patches of fog will continue to form with the visibility in some places falling below 100m.

"With temperatures also below freezing, icy patches will be an additional hazard on untreated surfaces.

"Fog will thin and clear from most places later in the morning."

Once the fog clears Blackburn is set for a sunny yet chilly day, reaching a high of 6°C by 1pm, though wind will make this feel more like 3°C.

The Met Office also issued some tips on how to drive safely in fog:

  • Make sure you know where your fog light switch is before you set off.
  • Keep a bigger distance between you and the car in front.
  • Be prepared for a sudden bank of fog or drifting, patchy fog.
  • Check your mirrors and slow down before entering fog.
  • Use fog lights when visibility drops below 100 metres, which is roughly the length of a football pitch.
  • Don't use full beam as fog reflects the light back.
  • Once the fog has lifted switch off your fog lights.
