This photo shows one of East Lancashire’s ‘lost’ railway stations.

Barnoldswick station, 1968It was taken in January 1968 to illustrate a story in which local residents and councillors were expressing concern about the state of Barnoldswick Station which was lying unused.

The station had opened in February 1871 but closed to passengers in September 1965. It was the only station on the Midland Railway’s Barnoldswick branch line which took passengers to Earby.

It would be another nine months before the station closed completely in July 1966.

The station would eventually be demolished with a supermarket and car park going on to occupy the site.
