Neighbours on a street in Ramsbottom have spoken of their shock after a woman in her 70s was found dead and a murder investigation launched.

Emergency services were called to a house on the quiet residential street, which is just off Peel Brow, at around 4.20am on Tuesday after a concern for welfare.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene and a murder investigation has been launched. A man and woman in their 30s have been arrested.

Neighbours have expressed their sadness and shock at the incident.

One resident, who has lived on the street for more than 30 years, said how she was “shocked” to hear the news from another neighbour.

Another neighbour shared how they only realised that “something was wrong” after they saw police cars outside later that day.

She said: “It’s usually quiet here, mainly just young kids and families so not much goes on.”

Detective Inspector Chris Mannion, Bury district, said: “Firstly, I would like to send my condolences to the family of the woman who has sadly died.

“Incidents of this nature will undoubtedly cause shock and distress to those who live and work in the area, we are working to piece together a timeline of events.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community. The property is now a scene and extra patrols have been deployed for reassurance.

“We are currently investigating the full circumstances of the woman’s death and are keeping an open mind as we carry out this work.

“I would urge anyone with concerns, or information to share, to speak with our officers.”
