The NHS is marking Lung Cancer Awareness Month by highlighting the importance of early detection and the prospects of improved treatment and outcomes.
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers and is often diagnosed too late for curative treatment.
Dr Shahedal Bari, a senior consultant at University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and lung cancer lead for Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: "Many people get diagnosed with lung cancer every year and there are thousands of people who die each year in the UK.
"However, the diagnostics of lung cancer have improved and the treatment has opened new horizons, giving us lots of options to treat and cure lung cancer.
"Surgical interventions for curative treatment of cancer has reached 30 per cent of cases compared to just 10 per cent 10 years ago.
"The earlier you get diagnosed the better the chances."
The awareness month coincides with World Radiography Day and the 129th anniversary of the world's first X-ray.
Lung cancer symptoms to watch for:
- Cough lasting three weeks or more
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Unexplained weight loss and tiredness
- Shortness of breath and wheezing
- Coughing out blood for two weeks.
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your GP as soon as possible.
Treatment options, including immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, are all available in the region.
Targeted Lung Health Checks are taking place in parts of the region, with more locations set to participate in the programme from 2025.
Dr. John Howells, clinical director for lung health checks in Lancashire and South Cumbria, said: "As a direct result of this vital lung health check service, we are now seeing more people than ever before successfully treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed early before any symptoms developed."
