Bosses at the Salvation Army in Blackburn say they will offer emergency support to rough sleepers as the cold snap continues to bite East Lancs.

Salvation Army leaders at Bramwell House hostel in the town centre are responding to the severe weather emergency protocol (SWEP) for the borough.

This will involve their navigators on the streets working with the borough council's housing needs team, as the temperature continues to dip below zero, offering emergency shelter to any rough sleepers they find.

The protocol is in place to ensure vulnerable people are protected and provided with shelter during severe weather and has been in place in the borough since the end of October.

Plans are said to be in place to keep the protocol activated during the winter months, not just when it is below freezing.

Colin Mottershead, service manager at Bramwell House said: “We’re only too pleased to open our doors and engage with those in danger within the area, supporting the fight against homelessness.

“No-one should have to sleep rough and the freezing weather has exposed how hard life can be on the streets.

"Extreme weather can kill and it’s critical that local organisations work together to support the most vulnerable members of our community, getting them safely indoors.”

The organisation says Bramwell House, in Heaton Street, has overnight provision for up to six rough sleepers and will provide an evening meal as well as breakfast the next morning.

Extra social support will also be offered to anyone who comes through the doors.

Mr Mottershead added: “We will also offer continued support and work with individuals to prevent them having to go back out onto the streets.

"Rough sleeping is dangerous, but it can be a matter of life and death when the weather takes a severe turn.”

Yellow weather warnings remain in place across East Lancashire - with tandem alerts on the effects the cold weather can have on health.

Earlier this year the borough council approved the return of homeless pods in the grounds of the former Shadsworth Leisure Centre for another winter.
