Up to 15 hours of snow and ice are set to hit Blackburn from today (November 18) as the Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning.

The warning covers all parts of East Lancashire and is in force from 7pm today until 10am on Tuesday.

The Met Office says travel delays are possible, adding there is a chance of injury from slips and falls.

Power cuts may also affect service, the Met Office says.

In Blackburn, snow is forecast from 7pm until around 5am with temperatures expected to dip to -2°C this evening, although it could feel more like -5°C due to strong winds.

On Tuesday, temperatures could plummet to -3°C with sunshine and cloud forecast from 9am onwards. The outlook is similar in other parts of the county.

An amber cold health alert has also been issued for the North West, which is in place from now until November 23 at 6pm.

These alerts are issued when the forecast weather is likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services.

Dan Suri, a chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “An area of low pressure slides its way eastwards on Monday night.

"The associated frontal system, marking the boundary between cold air in the north and milder conditions to the south, will bring disruptive snow to some areas between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

“This is likely to coincide with rush hour, leading to disruption to some transport routes across a central swathe of the UK on Tuesday morning. It will also be windy in the far south.

“Updates to the warnings throughout the week are likely, so it is important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
