The trial of a 26-year-old Burnley man who is accused of murdering a mum in the street will not go ahead as planned next month.

Habibur Masum was due to stand trial over the alleged murder of his wife Kulsuma Akter on December 2, but his case was mentioned before a High Court Judge at Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday morning.

She was told that difficulties with a psychiatric report being available meant a new date was needed.

The Honourable Mrs Justice Lambert discussed the situation with prosecution and defence counsel and confirmed that the trial would now be listed to start on June 9 next year.

At an earlier crown court hearing Masum, of Leamington Avenue, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge as well as other offences of stalking, common assault and making a threat to kill.

The defendant was arrested by police three days after his 27-year-old wife suffered fatal stabbing injuries during a broad daylight attack in Wigan Street, Westgate, Bradford city centre, on April 6.

She was taken to hospital but later died.

Her baby was not harmed in the incident.

Masum is alleged to have assaulted his wife on consecutive days in November last year and to have made a threat to kill her on November 24.

That charge alleges that Masum “traced her movements and located her at a safe house”, sent her messages of a menacing nature, sent her photographs and videos of the area and premises in which she was residing and loitered in the area of her temporary residence.

Masum has also denied being in possession of a knife in Wigan Street on the day of the alleged murder.

Mrs Justice Lambert fixed a further pre-trial hearing to take place in the week commencing April 7, 2025.
