Two sixth-form students have secured a place in a Cambridge University programme.

Ayesha Malik and Eva Carter, from Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, were accepted for the Lucy Cavendish programme, developed by the university's Lucy Cavendish College.

This programme is aimed at helping 'high-achieving students' realise their full potential, develop 'key' academic skills, gain insight into university-level study, and receive advice on making 'competitive' applications to highly selective universities.

Both students, currently in Year 12, will take part in the virtual outreach programme alongside around 1,000 other high-achieving students from state schools.

The programme will see students participate in weekly sessions to enhance their subject-specific knowledge and attend 'university readiness' webinars to help them think about their future steps.

Ayesha Malik said: "Being accepted onto the Lucy Cavendish Programme is a huge step forward in reaching my goals.

"It’s amazing to be part of a programme that opens up so many new opportunities and gives me insights into studying at a Russell Group university like Cambridge.

"Having access to mentors, workshops, and support through this programme will really help me understand what top universities are looking for and how I can prepare for that level of study."

Eva Carter said: "It’s an incredible chance to push myself, gain new skills, and build my confidence for applying to top universities in the future."

Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School principal James Johnstone said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Ayesha and Eva to broaden their academic horizons and gain firsthand experience of what studying at a Russell Group university entails.

"Programmes like these open doors, inspire ambition, and equip students with the skills and confidence to pursue their goals at some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions.

"We look forward to seeing them thrive and achieve great things through this remarkable experience."
