Two East Lancashire local authorities have updated their gambling policies.

Hyndburn and Burnley Councils have reviewed their guidelines on betting and other wagers in line with their statutory requirements under the Gambling Act 2005.

The new policies will be implemented on January 1 aimed at preventing crime, promoting fair gambling practices, and protecting vulnerable individuals.

They include minor updates to reflect the latest guidance from the Gambling Commission.

They emphasise protecting children and vulnerable individuals from harm while ensuring fair and transparent gambling practices throughout the borough.

A report to Hyndburn's Full Council meeting last week by its deputy leader Cllr Melissa Fisher said: "The existing policy has been kept under review since coming into force in January 2022.

"In producing the draft policy the Licensing Authority has had due regard to The Gambling Act 2005 licensing objectives namely; preventing gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, being associated with crime or disorder or being used to support crime; ensuring gambling is being conducted in a fair and open way; and protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling."

Burnley Council's community and environment boss Cllr Howard Baker said: “This updated Gambling Policy reinforces our responsibility to foster a safe and fair environment for everyone in Burnley.

"We’re committed to enforcing high standards and safeguarding vulnerable residents.

"By adopting these updated guidelines, we are working to support our community in line with national regulations and local priorities.”
