A multi-faith group which has led a number of community cohesion projects across Burnley has been honoured.

Building Bridges in Burnley was awarded the Barbara and Isaac Award for working with public, voluntary, and faith sectors across communities in the town to dispel misconceptions.

The group was established in 2001 in response to racially motivated riots of the same year and has aimed to challenge discrimination and religious intolerance within communities.

The organisation also became an official partner of Burnley Football Club last year.

Vice President of Building Bridges in Burnley, Mozaquir Ali, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have received this recognition for our work in promoting community cohesion in Burnley.

"It is uplifting and encouraging to be acknowledged for the vital contributions we have made to building bridges across diverse communities.”

Chair of Building Bridges in Burnley, Cllr Afrasiab Anwar, added: “This award highlights the importance of our commitment to equality and diversity in Burnley and underscores our diligence in ensuring that this vital work continues.”

The Bishop of Burnley, Rt Rev Dr Joe Kennedy, said: “This award serves as well deserved recognition of the important work that Building Bridges in Burnley undertakes and the unwavering commitment it has to the communities it represents.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the organisation and all its dedicated volunteers.”
