A new book has been launched to shed light on the experiences of children and young people whose mothers are incarcerated.

Drawing from real-life stories shared by families, the book is the third in a series by Siobhan Collingwood, the education lead for the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network.

The book, Freya's Story, gives voice to the thousands of children who are affected by maternal imprisonment every year, a reality faced by approximately 17,000 children across the UK.

Through the words of those directly impacted, the book highlights the emotional, academic, and financial toll maternal incarceration takes on children.

Siobhan said: “Freya’s Story is a book that gives children and families affected by maternal incarceration a platform to share their experiences in their own words. It has been a privilege to work with mothers, grandparents, and children whose stories teach us about the immense challenges these children face and the urgent need for greater awareness, support, and action.

"We hope this book opens up vital conversations and helps children know they are not alone, while also drawing the attention of professionals who work with children and families to the unique needs of this often unseen group.”

Freya’s Story aims to provide a resource for teachers, carers, support staff, and multi-agency practitioners. The book encourages open discussions between children and those supporting them, with the hope that it will empower families and professionals to better understand and meet the needs of children affected by maternal incarceration.

Dr Shona Minson, in her report on the impact of maternal imprisonment, captured the heartbreaking sentiments of children when asked what their three wishes would be.

One child, Caleb, responded: "My mum to come back, my mum to come back, my mum to come back."

This powerful sentiment echoes throughout Freya’s Story, highlighting the deep emotional impact on children and the urgent need for society to address the long-term consequences of maternal incarceration.
