The votes have been pouring in for the Lancashire Telegraph’s Best Curry House competition – and this week is the final chance to have your say.
All the shortlisted curry houses have been profiled over the past two weeks and readers have been voting for their favourite by picking up copies of the Lancashire Telegraph.
Abdullah’s, Blackburn Road, Baxenden
Originally a pub called the Rising Bridge Inn, in 2011, it opened as The Spice Room before being taken over by Mohammed Abdullah and rebranded to Abdullah's in 2020.
Since then, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength and has won a number of awards, including Curry Restaurant of the Year at the English Curry Awards and South Asian Restaurant of the Year at the Northern Enterprise Awards.
Aroma Asian Restaurant in Church Street, Burnley
Owner of the restaurant, Abdul Majeed, has been at the helm of the restaurant for 45 years.
Abdul was just 21-years-old when he came to Burnley, looking to set up a business. He opened Kohinoor Restaurant in 1979, which was located on Manchester Road near Burnley Town Hall.
He moved to the business’ current site, in 1987, opening The Shalamar Restaurant. In 2007, it was redeveloped to Aroma Asian.
Balti Stan, in Whalley Road Clayton-le-Moors
Balti Stan is run by Harun Miah and has been serving “mouthwatering Indian cuisine” since 1994.
Harun, who has been at the helm for 28 years and was created from a mixture of passed-down recipes and new ideas inspired by his visit to Bangladesh, is what makes it stand out from the crowd.
Freya’s Grill in Duckworth Street, Darwen
Freya’s Grill, in Duckworth Street, opened in 2022 and is starting to establish itself among other South Asian restaurants that have been open for decades.
Manager Naz Islam said he is ‘overwhelmed’ to have been nominated in the competition. The menu is expansive with a variety of items available, including classic curries and donner meals, plus other options such as chicken parmesan, burgers and beyond.
Jaipur Indian Restaurant in Burnley Road, Padiham
Les Hussain has been at the helm of Jaipur Indian Restaurant for 15 years. He said his dream of running his own Indian restaurant began at school.
The recipes have been passed down through multiple generations and classic curries, such as korma and balti dishes, are some of the best sellers
Les said the “cosy” atmosphere, great deals and quality food make Jaipur stand out from other Indian restaurants.
Kebabish Original, Whalley New Road, Blackburn
Kebabish Original opened 16 years ago and since then it has attracted visitors from across the North West keen to taste its ‘VIP’ karahis and other delicious dishes.
In recent years, the restaurant has picked up the top spot on TripAdvisor and also won back-to-back honours at the Asian Restaurant Awards.
The restaurant takes up a prime spot in Bastwell and has two floors, with an open kitchen giving diners the chance to see the skilled chefs hard at work.
Spice Garden, Redlam, Blackburn
The Spice Garden opened in 2022 and was formerly the Achari. The restaurant has a varied menu with some familiar dishes listed, including the Spice Garden Balti Specials.
It also has a varied starter menu and the interior is immaculately designed to give diners privacy in cosy booths.
Staff revealed some of the favourites at the restaurant included the ‘Chicken Mansoor’ and ‘Chicken Ashami’.
Saffron Street, King William Street, Blackburn
Saffron Street officially opened to the public in May 2023. The 130-seater restaurant venue underwent major renovations and was formerly the O'Neill's bar.
The street food concept has been around for a number of years, but at Saffron Street the kitchen team have been keen to celebrate it with their own signature dishes.
Curry favourites at the eatery include the butter chicken, the karahi ghosht and the taadkha daal.
Raj Indian Cuisine & Lounge in Bolton Road, Blackburn
It has been one of the most popular restaurants in town set on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal catering to couples and families for many years.
The restaurant offers a range of curries from spicy for the brave to mild and medium dishes for less daring palettes.
The Thira Restaurant, Darwen Street, Blackburn
The Thira Restaurant opened in 2017 on Darwen Street and attracts customers from across the region.
It is run by Subramaniam Iyer and business partner Bijumon S. Pillai who have picked up a number of national food awards.
Based close to a stretch of takeaways means there is fierce competition for custom but the Thira's unique menu has certainly made it stand out from the crowd.
