Rescue teams were scrabbled after three teenagers got lost on the moors of Pendle Hill.

On Thursday evening at 10.50pm, Lancashire Police requested assistance from the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team to locate the group whose phone batteries had died.

The rescue team, which had just completed a training exercise on the night.

A spokesperson said: “Although we had a vague area in which the group were located, we were not able to find an accurate location via phonefind due to the phone having run out of battery. 

 “Fortunately, because we were still in the area, team members were promptly back on the hill and the casualties were located within 20 minutes and were then walked off the hill and back to the village. 

“We and mountain rescue nationally pride ourselves on the level of search skills we formally have, and the experience over many hours to back it up. 

"All team members are trained to assist and then we also have a number of police qualified search managers who will liaise and coordinate effective searches. 

“Thanks to Lancashire Police for the speedy callout and thanks to the team members for their response and positive outcome.”

The rescue team urged people to take a torch onto the hills as phone torches won't last and drain the phone battery. 

The spokesperson added: “It was great to see everyone having a good time on Pendle to celebrate Halloween and even better to see numbers up on previous years.”

Pendle Hill is regularly named one of the most "haunted spots" in the UK.

It is renowned for its links to witchcraft and devil worship and is believed to be haunted by the spirits of the Pendle Witches who were tried in 1612 for the murders of 10 people by the use of witchcraft.
