The A666 isn't called the 'devil's highway' for nothing it seems...

This Halloween, the road that links Blackburn to Bolton, and onwards to Salford, has been named by Select Car Leasing as one of the UK's most haunted roads.

According to a Darwen-based roads expert, the haunted highway even spooked a princess back in the day.

Highways enthusiast, Bryn Buck, said: "It used to be prone to bad accidents back in the 1990s, especially on the stretch between Blackburn and Bolton.

"St Peter's Way was pretty bad as well until more recently.

"It has started behaving itself recently, but whether it sounds silly or not, it has a reputation that gets treated with respect.

"But like I said, since the 90s we've had more speed cameras introduced and it isn't as bad now."

One report from 2015 describes the moment a motorist witnessed a mysterious, white-clad creature pursuing their vehicle.

Bryn designs roads for a living and even turned up to school on World Book Day as the highway code when he was a youngster.

Working in the transport sector means he has heard his fair share of tales about the road's ominous carriageways.

He added: "I heard a tale from back in the day.

"A princess in the royal family, I can't remember which one, was being driven back from Manchester on the St Peter's Way section of the A666.

"She apparently saw the signs for the road and gasped, before adding, 'my word it's the devil's highway'."

Despite its ghoulish status, thousands of motorists travel on the A-road every day, which links Salford to Langho in East Lancashire.
