A Lancashire business has won a PETA 2024 Vegan Food Award.

Oato has scooped up the award for Best Milk for its freshly made Barista Whole oat milk.

The milk is made using British oats and filtered water.

PETA's 12th annual Vegan Food Awards celebrate the best animal-free offerings, including everything from fried 'chicken' to dairy-free cheese.

Lancashire-based Oato's milk is recommended for coffee or tea and is available at Waitrose or for home delivery through Colne-founded Modern Milkman.

PETA vice president of vegan corporate projects, Dawn Carr, said: "Animal-free fare is growing in quality and popularity as consumers increasingly choose cruelty-free, healthy, sustainable foods with no compromise on taste.

"From high-end to the high street, PETA’s awards show that it’s easier than ever to choose vegan."

The PETA awards aim to highlight the impact of the meat, egg, dairy, and fishing industries on animal welfare and the environment.

The organisation notes that vegan foods have a 'smaller carbon footprint' than animal-derived foods, and the meat and dairy industries are 'top producers' of greenhouse gases driving climate change.

PETA also highlights the health benefits of a vegan diet, including a lower risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Other winners at the 2024 Vegan Food Awards include Fortnum & Mason for the best Christmas pudding, while London-based Chick’N’Sours won the best vegan chicken for its Vegan MK2.

La Fauxmagerie’s Brixton Blue was awarded the best cheese, while The Fog on the Tyne’s Magpye Vegan Steak & Ale Pie was named the best pie, and One Planet Pizza’s Tex Mex won the best pizza.

PETA offers a free vegan starter kit for those interested in adopting this lifestyle, with more information available on their website.

The organisation can also be followed on social media platforms including Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
