The Lancashire Wildlife Trust is raising £5,000 to save newts and pond habitats.
This is part of an 18-month initiative to raise £300,000 for nature's recovery through the 'Step Up for Wildlife' appeal.
The trust wants to highlight the need to protect newts and their habitats across the county, which are vital for the ecosystem.
Jenny Johnson, head of marketing and income generation, said: "The funds raised will ensure we keep newts at the forefront of our conservation work, raising awareness about their importance and the need to protect them—both in our gardens and the wider region in both rural and urban areas.
"By supporting us, you'll help us maintain a strong focus on newts, highlight the value of ponds, and educate the public about the critical role they play in sustaining biodiversity."
Newts, especially the great crested newt, are under threat due to the loss of ponds and housing development.
The remaining ponds are in poor condition, putting newts and other pond-dwelling species at risk.
Cris Davenport, conservation officer, said: "Newts are an indicator species we use to identify whether a habitat is doing well, and right now they are telling us that the habitats are not great.
"Gardens provide stepping stones for newts between larger parks as part of a wider habitat network.
"Garden ponds are just as important as large ponds – we need the public’s help to be newt advocates and help them at home too."
The money raised will focus on keeping newts as a priority species, promoting the importance of ponds, and educating communities through workshops, school visits, and media.
To support the cause, donations can be made on the Lancashire Wildlife Trust's website.
By contributing, individuals will be aiding in the recovery of the species and their habitats, as well as shaping their future through nature recovery networks.
