Accrington residents were wowed by an incredible light show, which aimed to transform heritage architecture with contemporary installations.
On Friday, October 25, and Saturday 26, the Enlighten event brought displays of light art around five key heritage buildings in the town centre.
St James’ Church, Accrington Town Hall, Accrington Library, Market Chambers and the Victorian Arcade were all used and encouraged visitors to immerse themselves in the experience and to see much-loved buildings in a very different light.
Some of the UK’s most talented light artists descended on the town and provided laser shows, sculptures, dragon productions and live music.
Organised by Hyndburn Council, it also aimed to inform residents and Kazia Cannon created an augmented-reality trail around the town centre.
In partnership with the ‘Keeping East Lancs in the Picture’ project people were able to scan QR codes on their phones to learn more about the history of the town.
Children from Accrington Woodnook Primary School, Hyndburn Park Primary School and Oswaldtwistle St Andrew's CE Primary School were also involved in the event and performed a spoken word and poetry recital at Accrington Library, where they focussed on what the town meant to them.
Former Coronation Street star and Accrington resident Julie Hesmondhalgh said: “Wow what an absolutely fantastic experience it has been.
“I am very proud to be a part of it and well done Accrington.”
Today, October 27, the Town Hall Ballroom is hosting a ticketed live music gig, organised by Baby Rock Sampler, for families with a free performance by local-born violist David Aspin from Opera North on the ground floor.
Councillor Kimberley Whitehead, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and arts at Hyndburn Council, said before the event: “
