Police are looking to seize a suspected XL Bully after an attack left another dog dead and its owner with injuries to her hand.

At 2.38pm on Wednesday, October 23, officers were informed of an incident on the Seat Naze walking path off Burnley Road in Waterfoot.

The incident involved a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, called Alfie, who was attacked by the suspected XL Bully and later died of his injuries.

Alfie’s owner received injuries to her hand, which are not believed to be serious.

Following the attack, the owner of the suspected XL Bully left the scene with the dog.

Further enquiries have led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man from Rossendale on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control and he remains in custody at this time.

Since February 1, owning the XL Bully breed has become a criminal offence in England and Wales unless owners have an exemption certificate and anyone who owns one of the dogs needs to have the animal neutered and microchipped.

The law came in after a spate of attacks occurring with the dog breed and in some cases, victims were killed as a result.

Police efforts to locate the XL Bully are continuing, and they are urging anyone with information on its whereabouts or anyone who witnessed the incident on Wednesday to contact them.

Residents have been told to email 3000@lancashire.police.uk or call 101, quoting log 734 of October 23.

For immediate sightings of the dog call 999.
