A former journalist from Burnley, whose “pride in her family knew no bounds, " has died peacefully aged 93.

Florence King was born and raised in Burnley and grew up during the Great Depression and experienced the Second World War as a child and young teenager.

After bringing up her family in the North West, Florence took up a career as a journalist during her working life at various local newspapers around London.

She always had her family around her and continued to be a “devoted mother and grandmother”, grandson Max Stott said.

Max said: “Florence was a devoted mother and grandmother.

"Her pride in her family knew no bounds, and to her grandsons she was the quintessential grandmother, generous with her love and wisdom.

“An exceptionally talented seamstress, Florence was also a passionate dancer and gifted storyteller- her ability to remember the smallest of details only grew stronger with age.”

As a young adult, Florence was adventurous and surrounded by friends but over time she developed a serene appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, with a particular soft spot for romantic comedies.

She married Edward Stott, a fellow resident and former L.A.C. in the Royal Air Force, and together they raised two children on a farm just outside Burnley – Linda and John.

After raising the family in Burnley, Florence moved away from the area but maintained her love of the rolling Lancashire landscape.

Her relationship with Linda was described as not one of mother and daughter but rather best friends and during her final years Linda provided Florence with care, having gained significant experience working in the NHS and with the elderly.

Her son John now resides in Mallorca and his home in the Balearics became Florence’s cherished retreat, where she spent much of her retirement relaxing and creating memories with her family.

Max added: “In the days to come, her family will celebrate her life, drawing comfort from the knowledge that she is at peace, likely dancing among the stars, and sharing the many stories of a life beautifully lived.”

Florence King died on Thursday, October 24, peacefully at her home in Bracknell, London, aged 93.
