Match-worn shirts bearing the poppy are being offered up for auction by East Lancashire’s top football clubs following upcoming games.

Blackburn Rovers and Burnley FC are taking part in the annual fundraiser, which raises money for the Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance Day.

Run by MatchWornShirt, the auctions will see signed, match-worn jerseys bearing the poppy logo go on sale on the firm’s website following the matches taking place until November 11.

Fans can bid for the shirts at MatchWornShirt’s website and on its app, with all net proceeds from the auctions going to the RBL’s Poppy Appeal supporting armed forces veterans and the families of servicemen and women.

This is the sixth year the fundraiser has taken place, raising thousands of pounds for the charity in the process.

Last season, shirts from Rovers match against Preston North End and Burnley’s game against Crystal Palace bearing the poppy raised around £10,000 for the Poppy Appeal.

Ben France, from the Royal British Legion, said: “Battlefield trauma and mental health issues can manifest at any time in life and in different ways, including addiction, debt, homelessness and relationship breakdowns.

“Your poppy enables the RBL to support those who struggle with the upheaval and disruption of service life, and life after service.”

James Flude, head of business at MatchWornShirt, added: “The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces community, and we’re incredibly proud to support this cause for the sixth consecutive year.

“At MatchWornShirt, we’re passionate about giving fans the chance to own a piece of football history.

“Each signed, match-worn shirt from this campaign not only captures a unique moment in sport but also helps ensure that vital support continues for veterans and service personnel.”
