This skeleton of steel girders would become one of Blackburn’s most popular leisure facilities in the Eighties and Nineties.
Taken in July 1985, this photo shows the framework of the new leisure pool at Blakey Moor being constructed. At this point, the pool complex had yet to be named Waves.
Through the construction work on the left you can see Blackburn College’s Victoria Building, the former home of the town’s technical college.
Waves opened in August 1986 and it included a water flume, a massive curving slide which took those brave enough to try it outside the building before they completed their high-speed descent into the pool and a wave machine.
