Two men have been arrested after a police dog sniffed out suspected class A drugs in Burnley.

On Saturday (October 20), police were in the town centre with police dogs that have been trained to detect drugs.

During the operation, police dog Zola quickly identified two men who were searched. A "significant quantity" of suspected class A drugs were seized. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Officers say they will be conducting more search operations in the run-up to Christmas.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers from the special constabulary and our student development unit have been working with our licensing team, PC Butcher from the Police Dog Unit and PD Zola, our specially trained "people screening drugs detection dog".

“We have conducted an operation in Burnley Town Centre to target those who think it is acceptable to be in possession of drugs whilst on a night out.

“During the operation, Zola quickly identified two males who were subject to searches and a significant quantity of suspected class A drugs were seized. Two males have been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

“The supply and use of controlled drugs in the pubs and clubs in any of our town centres will not be tolerated. We will take positive action against anyone found with drugs and they can also expect to be banned from those premises that are members of the many local Pubwatch Schemes.

“We will be doing more such operations, across the whole of East Lancashire, in the run up to Christmas, so don't be the one who gets caught and ends up with bed and breakfast at Greenbank.”
