There will be an increased police presence in Blackburn with Darwen town centres this weekend, after a surge in youth-related anti-social behaviour.

Police have received reports of teenagers intimidating members of the public and abusing officers when challenged.

Officers say they will arrest any person committing criminality where necessary and will use civil orders to prevent further offending.

A statement has also been issued to parents, asking them to question where their children are this weekend.

A police spokesperson said: “Over the last week or so we've seen an increase in youth-related anti-social behaviour in both Blackburn and Darwen town centres. We've had reports of teenagers intimidating members of the public and abusing our officers and staff when challenged.

“As a result, you'll see an increased police presence around our town centres this weekend.

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that youths cannot be arrested and dealt with for this sort of behaviour.

"Let me be clear - we can and will arrest any person committing criminality where necessary, and we will use civil orders to prevent further offending.

“Parents - please be curious with your children if they are out with friends this weekend, and don't let them hang around the town centres where they may be drawn in to committing anti-social behaviour by association. Don't let them ruin their futures.”
