An eyewitness in the area said: "I've never seen so many emergency service vehicles and workers in Piccadilly Gardens in the years I've lived nearby.

“It's not unusual to see a few police cars or an ambulance but for there to be this many police officers, paramedics and even firefighters, as well an air ambulance right in the middle of the Gardens, you know it's got to be something very bad."

Another said: "I knew something was wrong when I saw a cordon blocking one of the walkways through and crowds of being being diverted away - then I spotted the bright yellow air ambulance and all the police cars, ambulances and the fire engine at the corner of the gardens.

“I also noticed two trams were out of action which will play havoc for commuters."
