Two teenagers were arrested in Blackburn last night after a large group were said to have set off fireworks towards the public and the police.

Lancashire Police said a 14-year-old boy from Blackburn was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. He has since been released.

A 14-year-old girl from Blackburn who was with the group was taken home to her family after being found in a vulnerable state.

Officers were called to Cathedral Square in the town at around 9.50pm on Thursday (October 18) to reports of around 15 youths letting off fireworks towards the public.

Police also said fireworks were deliberately set off in their direction, though none of the officers were seriously injured.

A police spokesperson said: "Behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated by Lancashire Police. We will have increased patrols in place over the coming weeks to tackle anti-social behaviour and will work with partners to take the appropriate action."

Cllr Mahfooz Hussain (Labour, Blackburn Central) said: "Incidents of this kind are taken very seriously. We'll do everything we can to avoid that kind of behaviour from youngsters, especially in the town centre.

"We will be talking with the police and we will be working together to make sure that this doesn't happen again."

Dispersal orders were used in another part of the borough last week after several incidents involving the misuse of fireworks.

The incidents in Darwen town centre saw two dispersal orders put in place after anti-social behaviour and firework disturbances.

A number of fireworks were seized and around 20 youths were identified by police.

Officers also pleaded to parents to keep their children safe and to educate them on firework safety.
